South India

South India constitutes the four southern states of the country - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. For convenience, here, we have included Goa, Pondichery and Lakshdweep under South Indian tag. Geographically, South India lies in the peninsular Deccan Plateau and is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west, the Indian Ocean in the south and the Bay of Bengal in the east. The south region also comprises two mountain ranges the western and Eastern Ghats. .

The culture of south Indians is Dravidian in origin with all the states speaking Dravidian Languages. Many historians subscribe to the view that the Dravidians existed and were spread in the Indian Subcontinent even before the Aryan Invasion. Even though there are around 23 Dravidian languages, only four are prominent and widely spoken; and they are Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

South Indian people celebrate a number of festivals with major ones being Pongal, Onam and Deewali. Dravidian culture has its own musical and performance forms. Unlike Hindustani Music, The Carnatic Music is purely Dravidian without mingling with others streams of music from foreign land. The dance forms of South India include: Bhartanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Koodiyattam and Mohiniyattam.

Apart from its culture and Heritage, South India is blessed with umpteen number of beautifully landscaped places that include mist-clad hill stations, serene and tranquil beaches, rhythmically – flowing rivers, dense forests with full of fascinating wildlife, cascading waterfalls and much more.
